October 17, 1921 -- or ten decades ago -- or five score ago -- or one century ago, Calantha Jane Doane Sears was born at her home in Nahant, with the family dog sleeping under the bed. Had the good people of Nahant known then what an incredible occasion this truly was there would have been ringing bells and celebrating in all neighborhoods.
This Sunday, October 17, 2021, we have the honor of celebrating Calantha’s 100th birthday at the Nahant Historical Society in the Community Center at 41 Valley Road. While we would have enjoyed a huge parade, town wide parties, and fireworks, it is with great pleasure that we honor Calantha in her own style – quiet, humble, and welcoming. Here is a special message from Calantha:
Please join us this Sunday, Oct 17th, between 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm for an open house style celebration. Calantha will not be present, as she will be celebrating with family. However, you can stop by on Sunday to record a birthday wish for Calantha and enjoy a birthday cupcake made by Roz. We are happy to deliver birthday cards -- just drop them off at the Historical Society.
If you wish to honor her with a gift, you might consider donating to the Friends of the Nahant Public Library or the Nahant Historical Society, two town organizations near and dear to her. Please continue to visit our public libraries and historical organizations and museums. These institutions continue to be the repositories of our unique histories and they preserve our stories and share them, “so that the future may know the past” – one of Calantha’s dearest wishes.
